On February 21st a 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit the south island of New Zealand. The quake hit around lunchtime in Christchurch, New Zealand’s second largest city, when offices and restaurants were very much occupied. Thus far, 65 people have been pronounced dead with a total of about 120 people rescued. Crews of firefighters, police and other officials continue to work nonstop to help locate others trapped beneath the fallen rubble. Prime minister, John Key, rushed to Christchurch just hours after disaster struck. “It is just a scene of utter devastation,” he said. “We may well be witnessing New Zealand’s darkest day.” I awoke to the news of this tragedy and was heartbroken. My heart and thoughts are with New Zealand.
